Electric pickup truck export to Zambia

Zambia is right-hand drive and landlocked, so every vehicle transits through Dar es Salaam, Beira, Walvis Bay or Durban under a bond. The Copperbelt mining sector is the demand centre, and it is the one African market where hydroelectric grid power makes electric fleet economics unusually favourable.

What does Zambia require?

Steering
Right-hand drive
Pre-export certificate
ZCSA conformity assessment (with ZABS standards reference)
Issuing body
Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency
Vehicle age rule
Age-based surtax applies to older vehicles — a 0 km unit avoids it
Ports and routing
Via Dar es Salaam, Beira, Walvis Bay or Durban; road to Lusaka and the Copperbelt
Sea or rail transit
30–38 days sea, plus 5–10 days corridor road transit

How is duty assessed?

Customs duty, excise and VAT apply on CIF plus inland transit cost, with a surtax on older vehicles that a new unit avoids. Zambia has periodically reduced duty on electric vehicles as part of its energy policy. Corridor haulage from the port is a substantial and often underestimated line in the landed cost.

We quote FOB China and CIF Zambia only — never landed cost, because a duty change between order and arrival would make that number wrong. Confirm the current rate with your clearing agent before committing to an order.

Who is buying MAXUS vehicles in Zambia?

Copperbelt mining contractors and their support fleets, agricultural estates around Mkushi and Mazabuka, and government and NGO fleets in Lusaka. Zambia's largely hydroelectric grid gives it some of the cheapest industrial electricity in the region, which pulls the total cost of ownership crossover point well below the regional average.

Which models can be registered in Zambia?

Zambia is right-hand drive, so the 8 models below are the eligible ones. Ordering the wrong steering is the single most expensive mistake in vehicle importing — the unit cannot be registered and cannot economically be returned.

Common questions about importing to Zambia

Which route into Zambia is best?

Dar es Salaam via the TAZARA corridor is usually shortest to the Copperbelt; Durban is longer but has the densest car-carrier service and the most reliable handling. Walvis Bay and Beira are both used and both price competitively depending on season. We quote CIF to whichever port you nominate.

Do the mines charge electric fleets on site?

Increasingly, yes — a mine site already has heavy three-phase distribution, so adding load-managed charge points is a small marginal capital cost rather than a new connection. That is the single biggest reason Copperbelt enquiries convert faster than comparable enquiries elsewhere in the region.

Which specification do Zambian tenders usually specify?

eTerron 9. It carries the full dual-motor driveline and factory RHD build but drops air suspension, which removes air-suspension diagnostics from the dealer readiness checklist — decisive where there is no MAXUS EV workshop yet — and releases 650 kg of payload.
